“Education is everybody’s business” – district school inspector W.H. Grant, 1954. Grant believed that education is the foundation of a successful future and that it is up to educators to ensure children are well fit for their futures. The Matsqui, Sumas-Abbotsford Area, or MSA Area (present day City of Abbotsford), faced a series of academic hurdles throughout the 1940s and 50s which would inevitably shape the school system to what we know today. In the span of 20 years, MSA’s schools would transform from passive institutions with low attendance to bustling hallways, flat roofs, and a stronger curriculum.
